The High School Chemistry classes have been studying how electrons are organized in atoms. A key idea is that electrons are restricted to specific energy levels. When atoms are "excited" by heat the electrons jump up to higher energy levels. As they jump back down, energy is released in the form of light of specific colors. The colors can be used in "flame tests" to identify the particular atoms present. In the picture you can see a bright orange flame typical of sodium salts. (This same orange color is seen in sodium street lights which are common in some countries.)

Nurse Siam visited the preschool students this week to talk about the importance of proper hand washing. Using a blacklight, the students were able to see a special luminescent cream on their hands representing germs. They then washed their hands following the steps Nurse Siam taught them and rechecked their hands to see if all of the "germs" had been washed away.

Over the last 2 weeks the Grade 5 classes have explored mixtures and solutions, as well as the many ways we can separate them using screens, filters, evaporation dishes and magnets. Students have enjoyed working in groups as they design models and plans on how to best separate mixtures of gravel, powder, salt and iron particles. The best part is conducting the experiments and seeing if all our hard work pays off!

On 30th August, the High School Counselling Department invited a representative from Le Cordon Bleu, one of the world's best culinary schools, to speak with students interested in studying Culinary and Hospitality Management.

CMIS staff were invited to join a Sunday service at The First Church of Chiang Mai. Some of our students participated in singing “The Butterfly Song” for the congregation. It was a beautiful morning service and we are grateful to have joined!
