Library News

As the school year comes to a close, there are several dates/items the library would like to remind you of.

  • May 18 will be the last day that books can be checked out during library class.
  • May 23 will be the last day of library classes for elementary.  After that the library will begin taking inventory.
  • To assist us in this process, we ask that ALL library books be returned to the library by May 25.

Remember that students with overdue books or fines will not receive their report card until these are dealt with.  Once inventory is completed, books can be checked out again for the summer.

The library will be open once a week during the summer (in addition to being open during the Summer School program).  Ms. Sandra Saowapon will ultimately be in charge of this, but will need some assistance as she cannot be there all the time.  She would like a couple of volunteers to come in once or twice during the summer to assist.  We haven’t yet chosen the day or time, but it will be either Tuesday or Thursday.  If you would like to help, please contact Ruth Erickson (library@cmis.ac.th) or Sandra Saowapon (ssaowapon@cmis.ac.th) in the library and we can arrange a final day and time that is convenient for all.  Training will be provided in how to run the library system.

Elementary News, May 11, 2012

Newsletter - Fri, 05/11/2012 - 10:20

Being reliable is a responsibility, but also a blessing.  It takes hard work to keep your promises and agreements, and to let people to know they can count on you.

It is a blessing because that means you can also expect that type of behavior from others, too.  Isn’t that great?

Being reliable means that you don’t forget and you don’t need to be reminded all the time.  Other people can relax knowing that things are in your reliable hands.  Isn’t it disappointing when someone says they will do something for you and then they forget?  That is not being reliable. It shows that they really do not care about keeping their commitments.

I like being around people who do what they say and say what they mean, don’t you?  These people do not make promises they know they cannot keep.  The do not offer the moon when really all they can honestly offer is a glance at the stars.  That is okay, because that is all they said they could offer.

Those are the kind of people who will help you when you need a friend, assistance with a job, or friendly support.

If you are having trouble being reliable, why make not make a chart and post it in your room. Think of the things you need to improve on and put those on the top of your chart.

Your chart might look something like this:

Got up / went to bed on time. Made my bed. Packed my backpack. Did my homework. Fed the dog. Practiced the piano. Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday

Put things on the chart that are causing you some trouble now, and put a star or tick mark in the box if you can do it without being reminded. Talk with your parents and see what things should go across the top of your chart. This is one way to start being more reliable. Practice makes perfect. Good luck this week with your chart.  Hope you can fill it all in and become a person who practices the virtue of reliability.

Have a great week.

Don’t forget to come out tonight at 5 PM to the Elementary Art and Music Event. See you there.

Congratulations to our KG teachers and students for their wonderful assembly on Forgiveness. We are so proud of you all getting up on the stage to do this assembly. Well done!

Thank you to all the volunteers who were able to come out on Thursday so we could say a big

THANK YOU!

in person for how you have helped CMIS this past year. Without volunteers, many things would not get done and we would be without a lot of activities. It takes a community/village to raise a child and volunteers to make a school special.

CMIS is blessed with many wonderful people who make us special and for whom we give thanks.

Grade 6 Field Trip Adventures

Newsletter - Fri, 05/11/2012 - 10:10

Grade 6 enjoyed our exciting overnight field trip at two locations this year.

We began at Mok Fa campground where we did some hiking and played in the waterfall.  We enjoyed our big campfire at night with great skits and songs and poetry performed by all groups.  Each group was also responsible for one time of games planning and one meal set up and clean up.

Our breakfast crew at Mok Fa worked hard to fry eggs and serve the hungry masses.  Water balloon fights, capture the flag, and hidden clue games all made for fun.

The second day we were at Mr. Storey’s wife’s village named Baan Khong.  It was very exciting and challenging to learn how to make woven baskets.  Most of us needed a lot of help from the Lahu ladies.

An obstacle course and a different clue hunt were fun games planned by student groups that we enjoyed at the village, and clean up groups washed a lot of dishes, with some help from the rain that began.

A rainy evening didn’t deter the fun, though, as Mr. Storey told some great camping stories and a few scary tales to keep the adrenaline pumping indoors.

The last day we enjoyed a beautiful hike UP a mountain side to another small village, through orchards, and back past rice paddies.  The time we played in the stream was also enjoyable to cool off, and we all joined together to build a small dam and build our own mini pool.  What a great way to start Songkran!

Thank you to all who made it a happy, memorable trip.

We have a KILN! Do you remember the Silent Auction and Dinner in November of 2010? Way back then we raised money for the arts and physical education. One of the designated items was a kiln. A fter much trouble and many attempts, we finally purchased and installed a kiln.  See the article below for more details.

Enjoy your holiday on Monday, May 7!

- Lance Potter, PhD, Superintendent (principal@cmis.ac.th)

We want your feedback. Families matter very much at CMIS, and we are doing our annual survey of family data and opinions.  This survey will only take a brief amount of time (26 multiple choice questions) and gives us a lot of valuable data to work with as we plan to improve CMIS.  It is also an important part of our WASC accreditation process.  The CMIS Board would like to encourage all our CMIS families to take this time to respond, and give extra comments as you desire, so we can serve you better.  Please click the link to complete, one survey per family by Friday, May 11.  Thank you for caring! https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NRLN5ZD - CMIS Board Kiln Creates New Opportunities in Art

CMIS is the proud owner of a new kiln!  Thanks to the great efforts of the PTG who raised the funds to purchase the kiln.   A kiln is a device very similar to an oven, that is used to heat up ceramic wares to very hot temperatures (about 1,300 degrees celsius).  This process transforms fragile, dry clay ceramic pieces, into very strong and durable stoneware, by partially melting the clay particles until they flow together.  Stoneware may then be decorated with glaze, and re-fired, which seals the clay body making it safe to eat or drink out of.  We are very happy to announce that because of the arrival of the kiln, the Elementary and High School art classes will now be able to teach the art of ceramics to our students!  If you are interested in expanding the ceramics program at CMIS, donations of clay tools, pottery wheels, and other ceramics related things are all welcome! Please contact the art teachers, Elizabeth Wendler (ewendler@cmis.ac.th) or Sue Eubank (seubank@cmis.ac.th) for more information!

Thai Summer GL Program for CMIS Secondary School Students

Newsletter - Fri, 05/04/2012 - 13:00

Thai Summer GL Program:

Some Thai students will not be able to schedule all of the courses they want in high school because they are required to take Thai GL at the same time that some of their preferred courses will be offered.  As a solution to this situation, CMIS will conduct a Thai GL Summer Program so that Thai citizens can meet the Thai GL requirement over the summer.  Therefore, those students will be free to sign up for any courses they want for the next school year.
The Thai GL Summer Program is NOT the same as the CMIS Summer Camp Program, although the dates for the two programs will overlap. The Thai GL Program will begin on Monday, June 18 and will end on Friday, July 27.  The cost for the Thai Summer GL Program is 35,000 baht for the six-week program.  The cost includes all activities, materials, field trips, and lunches. Those students who attend all six weeks and complete the required assignments will receive Thai GL credit for their transcripts.
This applies to CMIS students who:

  • are Thai citizens,
  • are required to take the Thai GL course
  • will be in Grades 9 thru 12 next year,
  • and who will have scheduling conflicts with next year’s schedule
The Thai GL Summer Program is OPTIONAL.  Students are not required to attend.  Those who choose not to attend, however, will have to take the regularly scheduled Thai GL course during the 2012-2013 school year.
Any Thai secondary school students who want to sign up for the Thai GL Summer Program need to SEND AN E-MAIL to Khru Laa (sbuarawong@cmis.ac.th).  Registration for the Summer Thai GL Program will be open from now until 25 May 2012.  In order to participate, students must inform Khru Laa AND pay the 35,000 baht fee to the Finance Office.  After 25 May, no additional students will be allowed to attend.
If you have any questions, please contact Khru Laa or the School Office (ckumkiti@cmis.ac.th) for further details.
Thank you

Welcome to a new month and a new virtue to work on perfecting. Hope you made some great improvements last month with forgiveness and wish you all the best for the month of May.

May is time to focus on being reliable, or the virtue of reliability. This seems like a good time to highlight this virtue. This is the last month of school for this school year and hopefully, over the year, you have learned a lot about being reliable as you improved in the other virtues.

You demonstrate reliability when you do your homework every night without being asked, or when you do the daily jobs that are your responsibility. When you are reliable, people know they could depend on you.  So, you already know a lot about this virtue.

As with most of the other virtues, being reliable is a combination of many other virtues. You care about doing what you said you would do. You show self-discipline and do it even though you would rather do something else at the time. You show dependability. People know they can trust you to do what you said and do the best you can. You show consideration for others by not letting them down. You are courteous to them by following up on what you said you would do. You are faithful, you never let people down when you gave your word (unless there is an emergency that you could not control). I could go on listing all other virtues connected to being reliable, but I think you get the picture.  Do you?

During this last month of school, the most important month of all, you have the opportunity to show yourself and others just how much you have grown this year.  Not just in how much you know or can understand or the amount of work you can complete, but also how you have grown as a person of virtues. I hope that you will be able to demonstrate how reliable you are now, after nearly a whole year of learning, listening, helping, cooperating, and sharing.

For this coming week, why not make a list of some of the things you do that show you are growing in being a more reliable person?  I hope you are happily surprised at how often you show the virtue of reliability. Please drop in and share your list with me. I would love to see your list.

Have a wonderful weekend and good luck as you try to be more reliable at home and at school.

CMIS Players Win Many Medals at CMAC 2012 Senior Table Tennis Tournament

Newsletter - Fri, 05/04/2012 - 12:20

It was hot, muggy, and crowded in the Lanna IS venue for the 2012 CMAC Senior Table Tennis Tournament last Saturday, 28 April, but the fourteen CMIS Eagles who played there weren’t daunted by the heat, distractions of close quarters, jets flying overhead, or tough competition.

At the end of the morning’s matches, Eagles had won seven of the fourteen medals awarded, including Issy Teriyapirom’s first-place gold in the combined U16/20 Girls Singles division, Solomon Na-Muangtoun’s gold and Samuel Scharfschwerdt’s silver in the U16 Boys Singles division, and Soho Brodard and Kelly Perry’s gold over their teammate-opponents Clarissa Shortland and Pearl Sindhuchatra, who took home silver medals in the Girls Doubles.

Match play was fast and furious from the opening rounds. Rachel German, Clarissa, Sanford Chu, and Guide Kanjanakuha were stopped in the first round when they drew seeded players in their divisions. Rachel played a U20 girl and Sanford and Guide played “up” in the U20 Boys division. Samuel Emilsson won his first two matches and advanced to the quarter finals of the U16 Boys before being knocked out by Chris Collins in a match that saw the first game go to 16-14. Yu Shin Bae, also playing “up” in the U20 Boys, won his first match but lost in the second one. He and Guide won their first round doubles match, too.

Issy played intensely and skillfully in the combined U16/20 Girls division and went on to defeat Nick from NIS (11-3, 11-5, 11-2) in the finals. Kelly and Soho both won their opening round matches but were knocked out in the second round.

Harry Jung joined Chris, Samuel, and Solomon in an all CMIS U16 Boys semi-finals, where Samuel S. defeated Harry in a fiercely fought match (11-7, 8-11, 11-9) and Chris bowed out to Solomon in another equally intense three game match (10-12, 11-9, 11-9). In a match that had the spectators clapping and cheering on practically every point, Solomon captured the gold in the finals, defeating Samuel in straight sets in the best 3 of 5 finals (11-6, 11-7, 11-8).

One of the many highlight matches of the morning occurred in the U16 Boys Doubles quarter-final, which pitted Harry and Solomon against Chris and Samuel. The games were 14-12 and 15-13, with Chris and Samuel advancing to the semis, where they ended their great run against an NIS duo in one of the most dramatic matches of the day, as Samuel dove parallel to the floor to return an angled drive for a winner.

In the other all Eagles final, Clarissa and Pearl took Soho and Kelly to four games in the Girls Doubles final (8-11, 11-4, 11-8, 11-8).

Coaches Boonlert Teriyapirom and Jeff Lynn were very proud of all the athletes, who played with heart and good sportsmanship. Many parents and CMIS student supporters were in attendance and could be heard cheering on the Eagles all morning.

Special thanks go to Andy and Ellen Collins who arrived early and stayed late to take team pictures before the tournament, got action shots during match play, and took the photo of the medal winners.

Mr. Jeff Lynn, Secondary School Learning Support Teacher (jlynn@cmis.ac.th)

For the doubles, Ken played with Own, a player from LIST, and they took second in the U11 Boys’ category.  For the U13 doubles Rees & Peter and Lea & Nicole each won second.  Finally, the U13 doubles champions were Peter, Ieuan, Sophia, and Jully.

Elementary News, April 27, 2012

Newsletter - Fri, 04/27/2012 - 11:00

Welcome back!  Hope that you had a wonderful time with your family and friends during the break.  We are into the most important part of the school year, the last six weeks. This is where you get to demonstrate to yourself, your teacher, and your parents just how much you have learned and matured this year.  I hope you are ready for the challenge. Good luck!

Forgiveness; did you need to forgive someone over the break?  Did you need to ask someone to forgive you?  I hope you did it sincerely and honestly. The way you say your words is almost as important as the words you choose to say. Did you know that?

You practice forgiveness by first admitting the mistake that you or someone else has made. Facing the truth about what happened takes courage. You may feel sad and angry. Let your feelings come and then let them go – like leaves passing by in a stream.

When you are forgiving, you don’t punish someone by taking revenge or holding a grudge. You don’t punish yourself by calling yourself bad names.

If someone is not forgiving, others feel worried around that person. People who don’t practice forgiveness judge and criticize others instead of giving them a chance to improve.

Forgiveness is the best way to encourage yourself and others to be better, to try harder, and to make changes.” The Family Virtues Guide.

I am going to end this month’s virtue with three quotes; read them and see if you can figure out what they mean for you.  Discuss them with your family and determine how you should act:

  • Forgiveness is a virtue of the brave.”Indira Gandhi
  • Forgiveness is me giving up my right to hurt you for hurting me. – Anonymous
  • Forgiveness is the fragrance the violet sheds on the heel that has crushed it. – Mark Twain

I am thankful for the gift of Forgiveness. It lightens my spirit.”

See you in May when we will focus on another virtue. Have a great weekend.
