Admission to CMIS

Admission to CMIS
PDF version

Limited Space Available:  We are currently operating at almost maximum capacity, but we are still accepting applications from qualified, priority applicants.  Some families have recently informed us of their intent to withdraw at the end of the current semester, and we also have a few remaining unfilled spaces at both Elementary and Secondary levels.  We have already completed most of our admissions testing for the second semester, however, we will continue to accept applications for the second semester of the current academic year all the way up until the April break. For secondary school, all applications must be received and processed in time for students to begin promptly in the beginning of January, no later than the second week of the second semester.

Although we expect to have filled most of our available positions, we still have spaces for priority applicants in selected grade levels.  Our Priority Categories are 1) Diplomatic / Consular Families, 2) Missionary Families, 3) NGO / Non-profit organization families, 4) siblings of current CMIS students, and 5) former CMIS families who are returning from abroad.

As of January, we are currently accepting applications for the 2012-2013 academic year, which begins on August 14, 2012.

The student application form for the 2012-2013 academic year is currently available from this site, in Open Office format.  Please download the form and complete it electronically before printing or submitting the application as an e-mail attachment.  The 2011-2012 application form is still available for those who are interested in second semester enrollment into the current academic year, but we can only accept applications for this current year until the end of February 2012.  When applying, please be sure to use the form that matches the year in which you want to enroll.  Please note:  Kindergarten applicants must be five-years-old by the first day of classes in August.  The age and grade standard is set accordingly, i.e., Grade 1 applicants must have reached their sixth birthday by the start of school in August for the year they want to attend.

Also please note, CMIS has instituted a Standard Fee Structure with reduced rates for eligible families.  The categories and conditions for eligibility are as follows:

  • Standard:  Applies to all CMIS families currently categorized as Standard, as well as all new students who will begin in the 2012-2013 academic year, not in one of the following reduced rate categories*.
  • Discount:  Applies to all CMIS families currently categorized as Discount, those who attended CMIS before or during the 2010-2011 academic year, and to new students whose parents work with regional or local non-profit or non-governmental organizations; both Christian and non-Christian.  This category also includes missionary families who are sponsored by a mission agency, but do not raise their own support.
  • Self-Funded Missionary:  Applies to all current CMIS families who meet the criteria, as well as all new students whose parents actively serve as self-funded Christian missionaries. (Any qualified missionaries who are not self-funded would be considered "Discounted" for accounting purposes.)

*Eligibility for either reduced rate category requires proof of affiliation with an appropriate organization.

Please contact Mr. Raymond Whitney at info@cmis.ac.th for an application and further details.

Admissions Process

The CMIS admissions committee is responsible for making all decisions regarding student applications. In their assessment of an application, the committee takes the following information into account:

  • applicant's profile
  • previous academic background
  • performance on our entrance test
  • English language ability
  • availability of space at the recommended grade level

Application Procedure

The admissions office must receive a completed application, including the application fee and all supporting documents, before an applicant can be considered for admission.  An admissions interview (for families of Kindergarten and Grade 1 applicants), or entrance assessment (for students in Grades 2 to 10) will be scheduled as soon as possible after a completed application has been received.  (Grade 11 applicants who are non-native English speakers or those who have been studying in a non-English academic environment may also be asked to sit for an entrance assessment.)  A follow-up interview with the Superintendent, and discussions with parents, present or past teachers, school administrators, or counselors may also be required in order to provide an accurate assessment of an applicant's ability to succeed at our school.

Application Form

All applications must be made on the CMIS Application for Admission form, which may be obtained from the school office, admissions office, or downloaded here. The application is also available in pdf format.

Required Documents

It is the responsibility of the applicant's family to ensure that the school has received the following:

  • a completed, signed Application for Admission form
  • payment of the non-refundable application fee of 3,000 baht
  • academic records in English, as follows:
    • for Kindergarten and Grade 1 applicants with a previous schooling background, all pre-school and kindergarten reports;
    • for students applying for Grades 2 to 8, report cards for the current year and for at least one previous year;
    • complete and official transcripts for all high school applicants;
    • for applicants with home schooling experience, a detailed curriculum document with grades for the home schooling time period must be submitted.  Standardized test scores may also be required.
  • three (3) recent passport size photographs
  • a copy of the applicant's immunization records, along with any pertinent health records
  • a photocopy of the applicant's birth certificate
  • a photocopy of the applicant's passport with non-immigrant visa and departure card – a tourist visa is not acceptable
  • photocopies of the parents' passports with non-immigrant visa and departure card – a tourist visa is not acceptable
  • authorization to enroll from sponsoring organization, if the organization is paying school fees
  • for applicants living with a guardian, a letter of guardianship (available from the school office), and a photocopy of the guardian's passport with non-immigrant visa and departure card or Thai ID card

School Visits

Prospective parents and families are invited to visit the school by appointment with the Admissions Officer, either prior to an application or as part of the admissions process.  Such scheduled visits may include a tour of the school and discussion of the application process.

Entrance Testing

Assessments are tailored to the age/grade of the applicant, and are scheduled and processed as quickly as possible after a completed Application for Admission has been received.

  • Applicants for Kindergarten and Grade 1: applicants and their parents meet with the Admissions Testing Officer for a brief interview, at which time the applicant is assessed in the areas of fine motor skills, language, and maturity or program readiness.  Kindergarten applicants will be assessed by the DIAL (Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning) method.
  • Applicants for Grades 2 to 10: students write a ninety-minute, multiple-choice diagnostic test covering the areas of mathematics, reading, and language (vocabulary, comprehension, written expression, spelling, punctuation, and word usage). Students applying for Grades 5 to 10 are also required to write a brief composition on a suggested topic.
  • Applicants for Grades 11 and 12: no entrance test is required – admissions decisions are made on the basis of the applicant's official high school transcripts.  However, Grade 11 applicants who are not native English speakers, or who have a wide range of scores on their transcripts, may also be required to sit for an entrance assessment.

Admissions Decisions

Admissions decisions for August enrollments are made from February through August of the preceding academic year.  For students in Kindergarten to Grade 6 who apply to enter after a school year has already begun, decisions are made once an application is complete and availability of space is confirmed.  Our school has a closed semester policy for Grades 7 to 12, which means that the intake of new students in those grades occurs only twice a year – at the beginning of each semester (in August and January).  Following review of an application by the committee, an admissions decision will be issued in writing, based on the following categories:

  • Accepted: The applicant is accepted for admission to CMIS, and a space is reserved for them at a particular grade level.
  • Conditionally Accepted: The applicant is offered a place in the school with certain conditions attached.  In some cases, further interviews with CMIS administrators or teachers, support in English, or a summer school placement may be a pre-requisite to entry.
  • Not Accepted: The applicant does not meet our school's requirements for admission, or no space is currently available at the appropriate grade level.  Each year, some applicants are denied admission for one or more of the following reasons: on the basis of their academic and/or behavioral records; when their English language ability is not at a satisfactory level for the appropriate grade placement; or when CMIS lacks a program to meet the applicant's specific needs.
