Welcome, Khun Gai!

CMIS is pleased to announce our new cafeteria concessionaire, Khun Gai (Montana) Pawittranon, the owner of the Bake & Bite restaurants in Chiang Mai.  Khun Gai is well known to many CMIS staff and students, as she opened the B&B restaurants in 2000, and expanded to the Wat Kate branch in 2009. A native of Lampang, she has a Bachelor’s degree in Food Science and Technology from Chiang Mai University.  She received her Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) from Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, MI.  She has always been fascinated with the restaurant business and loves to cook.  She enjoys experimenting with different kinds of foods and even though she operates commercial restaurants, she prides herself on her own home cooking.  Khun Gai enjoys growing her own vegetables, baking her own bread, making all of her own condiments, and being involved in every step of the food production process.  She insists on the highest quality ingredients and the most reliable sources to ensure that her food is not only delicious, but also naturally healthy.  Her philosophy is that good food is the basis of good health, which leads to a good life.

Khun Gai was excited to learn of the opportunity to work with CMIS.  She has a personal interest in seeing that school children have healthy lunches with a variety of delicious alternatives.  In preparation for this concession, she spent time speaking with teachers, parents, and school staff regarding what kinds of food to provide in the school lunch program.  She also had good communication with the former cafeteria concessionaire, and learned what types of issues affect our CMIS lunch program, as well as ways that the food and service could be improved.  When school began on August 15, she immediately began offering a combination of hot and cold, Thai and Western dishes, including a daily selection of noodles, some spicy and non-spicy dishes, and a daily selection of meat protein.  In addition, there is a vegetarian selection every day, as well as a variety of hot and cold breakfast selections.

 Cash only, please!

Unlike previous years, the cafeteria does NOT accept coupons.  All food items, including snacks, may be purchased with Thai baht.  Students are provided with the option of signing up for the set lunch program, and paying for the full semester in the Finance Office, or purchasing items from the buffet or noodle lines and paying in the cafeteria.

The daily cost of the set menu for KG through Grade 3 is based on 35 baht per day, which includes one main item, one side dish, and one dessert item.  Drinks are not included, although each child is provided with fresh drinking water.  Milk is available for purchase at an additional cost.  The set menu for Grades 1 through 4 includes larger portions of the same basic items.  The cost for the Gr. 4 thru 6 set menu is based on 45 baht per day.  For those who do not wish to use the set lunch program, daily food items are available for purchase.  Noodles or rice with one topping begins at 25 baht.  Additional items or increased portion sizes cost an additional 10 baht each.  A bowl of noodles begins at 25 baht, with proportionately larger sizes for 10 baht more.  Daily special sandwiches and salads are available, starting at 25 baht.  The sandwiches and salads are the same as those available at the Bake & Bite restaurant, but with slightly smaller portion sizes.

 Any problems?

For parents of children who have food allergies or any specific concerns, we ask that you contact Carol Hartmann, the School Health Officer.  Carol will serve as the cafeteria liaison and will schedule meetings with Khun Gai if needed.  CMIS is committed to providing the highest possible quality of food on campus, and to coordinating any parental or health concerns.  Parents are encouraged to contact Carol directly with any comments, suggestions, or concerns.  Of course, Khun Gai would be happy to hear your general comments and expressions of appreciation.
